The Body-Soul-Spirit Connect For Health and Wellbeing Through the Lense of the Bible written by Diana Jackson

The Bible views human beings as a Tripart being composed of Body, Soul and Spirit.  The body is the physical, material part, while the soul is often understood to encompass the mind, will and emotions. The spirit is seen as the divine element with in, connecting us to God and enabling spiritual experiences. In this article I am going to go into more depth on what this means to us and how through understanding who we are can bring health and restoration to our whole person.

All of my life I have seen how our lives are so connected to our 5 physical senses.  What we see, hear, smell, taste and feel, correlating to our physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.  These experiences have compounded from the time we were in our mother’s womb until this current time in our lives.  My desire is to give you the best informative thoughts and information to help expose how important it is to understand all of these aspects separately and together to be able to see what is going on inside of us.  To understand how all of these different aspects of who we are can affect us either positively or negatively in our Body, Soul and Spirit experience.

It all started at the very beginning of our lives unique experiences and situations we were born into, including our genetic contributions and our emotional experience that came through our parents, siblings and extended family and associations.  The things we experience whether good or bad, are given to us not only genetically and associations as mentioned above, but also through healthy and unhealthy habits, how we take care of ourselves.   The outcome of these experiences can cause us to feel good or bad about ourselves.

Many of us have gone through trauma, whether through the loss of a job, relationship or even the death of a loved one.  All of this can have a great effect on how we view ourselves mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  It is depending on each individual experience and how we deal with it can then also have a great effect on our physical health outcome. But I believe that all of these things can be overcome and dealt with one issue at a time.  We need to know it takes time to heal.  The word Healing means recovery.   It is our healing journey.  I want you to know all people have had similar experiences from one end of the spectrum to another; no one has been left out.  I hope this gives you a little comfort in knowing that we are not alone in this journey of understanding ourselves. Learning that we can heal, we are all on a journey of healing and wholeness.

It is important to know the Bible has a lot to say about all of this. Our Heavenly Father, who is creator of all things; who created us, made us with the ability to thrive and to heal.  He made us with the ability to make choices. However He gave us some parameters to follow to have a thriving life even in the midst of change.  Positive change will come as we see it all from His perspective.

I am going to share a few scriptures that will hopefully give you some insight regarding what He has to say to us in this journey. Starting from the Eden experience. Let’s see what the Bible has to say.  In Genesis Chapter 2:7 NKJV And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being. Amplified Bible says an individual complete body and spirit.  He also said it was very good. Breaking down this scripture will give us insight to not only who we are, what we are made out of.  Why we were made us in this fashion for His ultimately original plan for mankind.

Starting with the Body:  First of all God chose to make us from the elements we need, dust or dirt.  What is dust or dirt made out of?  Broken down rocks, minerals, organic matter, air and water.

  • A) Minerals in our bodies, we have 5 major minerals and 72 trace minerals that keep us running smoothly.
  • B) Organic matter is made of decaying plant and animal matter as well as the remains of living organisms that were once a part of the soil.
  • C) Living organisms, such as bacteria, fungi and worms, aka parasites that are crucial for soil health and nutrient cycling.   This is what we are made of and that is why it is so necessary to consume organic material to help us to maintain our overall health.
  • D)Our bodies consist of 70 percent water, so again we need good clean water for our bodies to thrive.
  • E)Air is made of 1part Oxygen and 2 parts Hydrogen which is necessary for cellular respiration, which is how our cells generate energy. Our cells can not effectively break down carbohydrates and other nutrients without it.  It is essential for all cellular functions. Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
  • 1)From the scripture above we can understand that it is important to consume nutrients grown from organic material, the things our bodies are made of and yearn for, that will feed our bodies.   We live in a society that has not put a lot of importance on food, but the times, they are a changing.
  • 2)Whole foods are so important. (Organically grown from the ground.  Organic fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, legumes, spices and herbs.  Grass fed meats, beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, goat, wild fish.)  The list goes on.
  • 3)Stay away from processed foods and synthetic supplements.  We must learn to read labels and to know what is on written on them to avoid harmful chemicals and dies in our foods.

Genesis 1:26 AMP Then God said, “Let us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in our likeness (not physically, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness) and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps on the earth.  {Ps 104:30; Heb 1:2;11:3}

  • 1)The Godhead made us with a spirit and spiritual personality that can communicate with our creator, we can pray and speak to Him, we can sense His presence in our life.  We have the ability to think and to reason and to feel in this life.
  • 2)He has given us a mind to reason with.
  • 3)God is a God of emotion, our emotions come from him, there are six basic emotions, happiness, surprise, fear, sadness, disgust, and anger. All emotions can be beneficial but they can also become unhealthy if we do not deal with them in a positive way.
  • 4)God, like himself gave us authority in our lives to make choices, to direct our lives and the things around us.  In other words we are never stuck even though at times we feel we are.  If we can allow God to be the center of the decisions we make He will work with us for a positive outcome.
  • 5)God,  from the very beginning gave us a conscious of right and wrong, as it says in John 1:9 That was the true light(symbolic of truth and knowledge) which gives light to every man.  This was even before He gave the 10 commandments to Moses. Romans 1 says, man will be without excuse for He has shown himself through creation.  Even after all God had given to man.  We have fallen short because we have become dull of hearing.  The Bible says to seek, ask and knock and it will be given to him Matthew 7:7-8.  I believe it is necessary to know our creator and His purpose for us to not only to give us the things we need to fulfill our purpose but to sustain us.  Again, this involves the whole person Body, Soul and Spirit.   I hope you can see the importance of understanding we must work at bringing together the fullness of who we are and every aspect about us as a human being must be addressed in order to fully heal and become whole.

We need to address where we came from and re-introduce ourselves to the one who created us and who has put a purpose in us in this life. The Bible tells us that the one who created us desires a relationship with Him.  In finding Him, He will assist us in our healing journey.  This is the ultimate plan for every man and woman.  God has provided everything in life for us and the wisdom to find it.   This next section goes over how God has not only provided food for our bodies and herbs for our healing. These Herbs assist our bodies in our healing recovery.  Remember God created our bodies to heal.  He is our healer.

Scriptures on healing through the use of herbs:  God has provided plants and animals from the very beginning to help us to sustain our bodies, to maintain balance through every stage of our lives.  He provided herbs to assist our bodies to do what it knows best to do, heal.  Here are a few scriptures about healing through herbs to give you a little background.

Exodus 15:26  God’s promise to heal the Israelites, potentially referring to various ailments and diseases, including those that could be aided by herbal remedies.

Ezekiel 47:12  Depicts trees on the riverbanks who leaves will be for healing.  Hinting at a connection between nature and healing.

Revelation 22:2  Mentions the ‘tree of life’ with leaves for healing of the nations.’, further emphasis the roll of plants in restoration and well-being.

Psalms 41:3  Promises restoration to full health in sickness demonstrating God’s sustaining power during illness.

Hyssop:  Mentioned in the Old Testament from cleansing and symbolic purification, potentially related to various ailments.

Spikenard, Frankincense, Myrrh and other Aromatic plants Used for incense, in cuisine, and as medicine, showcasing their versatility in ancient societies.

Herbs as a part of God’s creation: Along with God being our ultimate healer.  The Bible emphasis His role in healing, not the herbs themselves, as seen in Exodus 15:26  So, ultimately it is not the spices, oils, or plants themselves that heal, but God, the Creator of both plants and the human body.  While not explicitly prescribed for specific illnesses, the Bible acknowledges Gods provision of plans with medicinal properties, which humans can utilize and discern.

Mind and Emotions in Scriptures

Job 38:36,  Who has put wisdom in the inward parts or given understanding to the mind? Psalms 26:2, Prove me, OH LORD, and try me; test my heart and my mind.

Jeremiah 17:10,  I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds. Matthew 22:37, and he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your mind.

Romans 7:25  thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Romans 8:5-7  For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.  For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.  For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.

Philippians  4:7  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:2  Set your minds on things that are above not on things that are on the earth.

We are a three part being.  Body,  Soul and Spirit.

  • The Body, natural compound which we call flesh and bone, our fleshly body;  then there is the fleshly wants, desires and needs.
  • The Soul is comprised of our mind, intellect and the seat of our emotions.
  • The Spirit is the eternal part of us, consists of the  Eternal life essence of who we really are, it is where the Holy Spirit dwells, it is where the Godhead dwells for those of us who love him and have accepted His great gift of salvation.  Where in dwells his righteousness, peace and Joy.

There is great joy in seeking out the God of the Bible and learn the provision He has made for all mankind through His Son Jeshua, Jesus Christ.  The ultimate plan of salvation and healing.   It is Gods will that all men come to the knowledge of truth.  1 Timothy2:5  His arms are wide open.

So in conclusion, we have hardly gotten into the depths of all of this, but I believe I have given you just a little taste of how important it is to know the spiritual value of who we are and how God is very much involved in our ability to sustain our lives with abundant living Body, Soul and Spirit.   The next few articles I would like to explore how when we get the Body, the Soul and the Spirit in right alignment with His purpose and with what He has already provided for us we can begin grow in our healing journey.
